How to Create a Hygge Inspired Bathroom

How to Create a Hygge Inspired Bathroom

Imagine getting home on a cold winter day, heading straight upstairs, and slipping into your coziest robe and slippers. You run yourself a bubble bath to warm up and maybe even light a candle or two for ambience. Sounds pretty cozy, right? Well, it turns out this feeling of coziness is a defining characteristic of Danish culture, called hygge (pronounced hoo-ga). While the concept is difficult to translate directly, it loosely refers to a quality of coziness that creates a feeling of contentment or well-being. Essentially, it embodies all the intangible elements of home. While your living room may have all the makings of hygge (think, throw pillows, blankets, and candles), your bathroom could likely use a little help. So, before temperatures drop below freezing, add the warmth of hygge to your bathroom to ensure you stay nice and cozy all winter long.

Layer in Some Texture: Hygge is all about being cozy and nothing is cozier than wrapping yourself in a soft blanket. In lieu of making your bathroom the new home of your favourite throw blanket, try layering textiles for a luxuriously cozy feel. Consider replacing your existing bathmat and towels with an upgraded model —the fluffier the better! To take this trend one step further, display your new towels on a ONDA Towel Stand for all the cozy, hygge vibes.

Repurpose a Piece of Furniture: As much as we love selecting finishes like flooring, paint, and cabinetry, it’s your furniture that truly makes your house feel like a home. So why not bring in a piece or two from your existing collection to bring those homey vibes into your bathroom? We love placing a bench or chair beside the bathtub to add a bit of character and warmth. Bonus points for layering it with a few textiles like fluffy towels or a robe. Small end tables also provide a functional way to display bath products while adding to that lived-in vibe. Just be sure not to add too many pieces at once. A little goes a long way and clutter is certainly not part of the Danish aesthetic.

Warm it Up: You can’t feel cozy while also feeling cold, so adding a bit of warmth to your bathroom is key. Although in-floor heating and heated towel racks may be a bit of an investment, the warmth will literally radiate throughout your bathroom — making it worth the splurge!

Dim the Lights: When was the last time you walked into a spa and thought “geez, it’s awfully bright in here”? We’ll give you a hint, it’s never. Spas know that a huge part of ambience relies on lighting which is why it gets dimmer as you close in on your treatment room. Although bright lighting is key for makeup applications, it doesn’t lend itself very well to relaxation. Consider installing a dimmer switch to help you transition from the bright lights of the boardroom to fireside relaxation. Or bring in a small standalone fireplace and enjoy the warmth and relaxation of watching the hypnotic flames while soaking in the bath — we feel relaxed already!

Accessorize with Purpose: A few accessories go a long way towards creating that lived-in, homey vibe. We love the way a styled, wooden bath tray can add warmth to the stark white backdrop of your bathtub. Throw in a few plants and your well on your way to having the hygge-ist bathroom around.

Awaken the Senses: While it may be easy to make your bathroom look the part, don’t forget to focus on all the senses. We’ve already touched on how to style it (sight) and bring in textures. (touch), but to evoke the true essence of hygge we need to layer in a few more elements. Before you hop into that bath you ran earlier, light your favourite candle (we’re a bit partial to lavender or lemongrass), put on a relaxing playlist, and brew yourself a calming cup of tea. Now, step into that tub and soak in all that glorious hygge.

We’re feeling so relaxed thinking about it, we’ll just leave it at that.
